Use several measurements. The deepest point alone greatly overstates the volume.
Build the pond as one working system.
The hole, liner, water, pump, filter, pipework, plants and fish all affect each other. Planning them together costs less than correcting a badly matched system later.
Eight decisions before buying equipment

Decide what kind of pond you are creating.
Fish pond
Fish add waste, consume oxygen and increase the demand on biological filtration. Plan for continuous circulation, accessible filter cleaning and enough depth and shaded refuge for the fish you intend to keep.
Wildlife pond
A wildlife pond prioritises shallow margins, varied planting and easy access for animals. It does not automatically need a powerful pump or fish. Adding fish changes the balance because they eat smaller pond life and add nutrients.
Water feature
A decorative feature is sized around the appearance of the fountain or waterfall as well as water volume. Splash loss, wind direction and the return path matter. A powerful pump can empty a small feature surprisingly quickly if water blows or leaks outside it.
Choosing the position
Avoid placing the pond where every autumn leaf will land in it, where tree roots make excavation unsafe, or where runoff can carry lawn chemicals and soil into the water. Some sun supports plants, but long periods of intense sun can encourage temperature swings and algae.
Build in stable edges, planting shelves and an escape route.
Mark the outline with a hose before digging and view it from the house and garden. Level the perimeter carefully: a small difference becomes very obvious at the finished waterline. Include shelves for marginal plants and at least one gently sloping or stepped area so wildlife can leave the water.
Allow space between normal water level and the edge so rain and wave movement do not wash soil into the pond.
Decide where excess rainwater can leave without flooding buildings, electrics or neighbouring land.
Any open water can be dangerous. Assess access, visibility, barriers and supervision before work begins.
Calculate the volume before ordering
Volume determines water treatments, stocking, pump circulation and filter capacity. Record the final figure somewhere permanent. If filling from a meter, that measured amount is more dependable than an outside-dimension calculation.
Plan all penetrations and cable routes before filling.
Liner protection
Remove sharp stones and roots, use appropriate underlay and avoid stretching the liner tightly into corners. Leave enough material at the perimeter to settle after filling before trimming and finishing the edge.
Use generous hose
Narrow hose creates friction and reduces flow. The Fish Mate 5000/7000/9000 instructions state that 32mm hose gives maximum flow on those models. Keep runs as short and smooth as practical and avoid unnecessary elbows.
Outdoor electricity
All outdoor electrical equipment should be protected by an RCD. Use equipment and connections designed for outdoor or submerged service, keep plugs and joints dry, and have fixed outdoor wiring installed or checked by a competent electrician.
Never lift by the cable
Isolate the electricity before touching, cleaning or moving a pump. Never pull or suspend a submersible pump by its electrical cable. Follow the exact product manual and do not modify electrical equipment.
Switch off and isolate pond equipment before putting hands into the water. If a cable, casing, connection or RCD is damaged or repeatedly trips, stop using the equipment and obtain qualified help.
Match delivered flow—not just product names.
Start with the pond volume, then identify the filter’s required and maximum flow. Next calculate the vertical lift from pond surface to the highest outlet, add the effect of hose, bends and fittings, and consult the pump curve. The pump must deliver enough water after those losses without exceeding the filter’s safe flow.
Traps suspended debris. It needs cleaning before accumulated waste decomposes.
Provides surface area for bacteria that process toxic fish waste. Protect this living colony.
Helps control suspended green-water algae. It does not replace mechanical or biological filtration.
Supports fish and filter bacteria, particularly in warm weather or heavily stocked ponds.
Why we raise the pump
Support the pump above the bottom on a stable platform unless the product or system design specifically requires otherwise. If a hose splits or a return is blown out of position, the pump then leaves a reserve of water. Keep the support clear of soft sludge and ensure the pump remains fully submerged at normal operating level.
Commission slowly
Check every hose connection, valve and return while watching the water level. Measure actual flow where practical by timing how long the outlet takes to fill a known-size container. Recheck after the first day because hoses can settle and clips can loosen.
Clear water is not proof that it is safe for fish.
New biological media contains too few nitrifying bacteria to process a full fish load. Fish waste and uneaten food produce ammonia; bacteria establish in stages to convert ammonia to nitrite and then less harmful nitrate. Both ammonia and nitrite should remain at safe test-kit levels. Add fish gradually and test frequently.
Use a suitable dechlorinator for tap water, particularly where chloramine may be present.
Operate the pump and filter continuously unless the product instructions say otherwise.
Record ammonia, nitrite, nitrate and pH rather than judging water only by appearance.
Add a small number of healthy fish, then allow the filter to respond before adding more.
Chlorine or chloramine can harm the bacteria you need. When cleaning is required, gently rinse biological media in a container of pond water and follow the filter manufacturer’s instructions.
Give the pond time to settle.
Plant for balance
Use a mixture of marginals, submerged oxygenating plants and floating or surface-cover plants suited to the pond’s depth and sunlight. Plants take up nutrients, create shelter and help shade the water, but dead foliage must be removed before it decays.
Choose fish for the finished pond
Check adult size, social needs and winter requirements. A small fish in the shop may become unsuitable for a shallow or lightly filtered pond. Avoid mixing fish simply because they are available.
Acclimatise carefully
Minimise temperature shock, follow the retailer’s acclimatisation advice and avoid adding transport water unnecessarily. Observe new fish closely. Quarantine is the safer option where facilities and experience allow.
Feed what they consume
Overfeeding becomes water pollution. Give small amounts, remove uneaten food and reduce feeding as water cools and fish metabolism slows. Follow food and fish-species guidance rather than a fixed year-round routine.
A simple commissioning checklist
- Inspect the water level daily for unexplained loss.
- Check the pump intake and confirm the outlet flow has not fallen.
- Test ammonia and nitrite frequently after fish are introduced.
- Watch fish behaviour: gasping, clamped fins, rubbing or isolation needs investigation.
- Remove dead leaves and uneaten food before they decompose.
- Clean mechanical media when flow falls; do not sterilise all biological media.
- Check that a fountain or waterfall cannot blow water outside the pond.
- Record pump, filter, UV lamp and spare-part model numbers.
