Your koi live in the same water that carries away their waste.

Clear-looking water is not automatically healthy water. Good koi care begins with stable chemistry, dependable oxygen and filtration sized for the fish you have now—not the fish you bought years ago.

Why water quality controls fish health

A koi cannot move away from poor conditions in a closed pond. Its gills, skin and protective mucus layer are in constant contact with the water. Ammonia and nitrite, low oxygen, unstable pH, chlorine and accumulated organic waste all place the fish under stress. Long-term stress uses energy the koi would otherwise put into normal immune defence, growth and repair.

Good water therefore does more than make the pond attractive. It allows the gills to work efficiently, reduces avoidable irritation, supports normal feeding and behaviour, and removes waste before it can become toxic.

Efficient breathing

Well-oxygenated, well-circulated water helps oxygen reach the gills and the filter bacteria that process waste.

Lower stress

Stable temperature and chemistry reduce the repeated stress caused by sudden environmental changes.

Stronger natural defences

Healthy skin, scales and mucus form the koi’s first barrier against parasites and opportunistic infection.

Better feeding and growth

Fish generally feed and use nutrients better when oxygen, temperature and water quality are suitable.

Clean water gives injured koi the best conditions to recover

Koi can repair minor damage to skin and fins, but recovery is harder when the water repeatedly irritates the wound or carries a heavy organic and bacterial load. Clean, stable, oxygenated water supports the fish’s own repair processes and reduces additional environmental stress. It is the foundation of recovery, not a substitute for treatment.

Do not rely on water changes alone

Ulcers, deep wounds, raised scales, persistent red streaking, abnormal swimming, gasping or a fish that stops feeding need prompt investigation. Test the water first, isolate the cause and seek an experienced aquatic veterinary surgeon or koi-health professional where illness or injury is significant.

The water checks that matter most

Ammonia: aim for no detectable reading

Produced by fish and decaying material. Any detected ammonia requires attention to feeding, stocking, filtration and water-change practice.

Nitrite: aim for no detectable reading

Shows that the biological cycle is incomplete or overloaded. Nitrite interferes with the fish’s ability to use oxygen.

Oxygen and circulation

Warm water holds less oxygen while larger fish and filter bacteria require more. Watch especially during hot, still weather and overnight.

pH and KH stability

A stable result is more useful than chasing a particular number. KH helps buffer the pond against a sudden pH crash.

Also monitor nitrate, temperature and the disinfectant used in replacement tap water. Keep dated results: a trend often warns of a developing problem before the fish look ill.

A small koi does not stay a small biological load

Koi are bought when they are easy to accommodate, but their demand on the system rises sharply as they grow. A fish that doubles in length does much more than double in body mass. Larger koi eat more, consume more oxygen and produce substantially more solid and dissolved waste. The pond volume may be unchanged, but the load on the filter is not.

Plan filtration for adult fish

When deciding how many koi to keep, consider their likely adult size. Leave room in the filter and pipework for expansion, and review the system every year rather than assuming the original equipment will always be enough.

How to increase capacity safely

  1. Measure the present load. Record pond volume, fish numbers and sizes, feeding, ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, pH and KH.
  2. Restore the current system. Clear restrictions, check the impeller, maintain the mechanical stage and confirm the real return flow.
  3. Add biological capacity. Increase suitable mature media or add a correctly sized filter rather than depending only on more pump flow.
  4. Improve solids removal. Remove waste before it breaks down and consumes oxygen. Good mechanical filtration protects the biological stage.
  5. Increase aeration. Supply oxygen to both koi and filter bacteria, especially in summer, after feeding and during treatment.
  6. Match the pump to the whole circuit. Account for hose size, lift, bends and the filter’s permitted flow. A larger pump cannot correct an undersized filter and may push water through too quickly.
  7. Mature additions gradually. New biological media needs time to colonise. Test frequently and avoid increasing the food or fish load at the same time.

Everyday habits that protect koi

Observe before feeding

Check appetite, swimming, fins, skin and breathing. A change from normal is often the earliest warning.

Feed for conditions

Uneaten food becomes pollution. Match feeding to temperature, fish activity and the filter’s proven capacity.

Change water carefully

Use an appropriate dechlorinator, avoid abrupt temperature or pH changes and calculate treatment for the water added.

Keep the pump running

Biological media needs a continuous supply of oxygenated water. After maintenance, restart promptly and verify the return.

A practical annual filtration review

At the start of the main feeding season, compare current koi size and feeding with the previous year. Recalculate pond volume if it was only estimated, inspect every hose and connection, measure actual return flow, check the filter’s rated capacity and decide whether more mechanical filtration, biological media or aeration is needed. Build extra capacity before summer, when warm water and heavier feeding place the greatest demand on the system.
